Complaints

The Dean (“Deken”) oversees all lawyers practicing in Sint Maarten (Dutch Side). The Dean evaluates complaints submitted against a lawyer and seeks to resolve issues when possible—often through mediation.

The Dean may require some time to conclude the review, depending on the complexity and nature of the issue raised. At the conclusion of the process, the Dean will inform you and the lawyer of the findings. Please note that the Dean does not have the authority to issue a binding ruling on the complaint.

If the issue cannot be resolved through the preliminary review—or if you request further action—the Dean will forward your complaint to the Raad van Toezicht voor de Advocatuur (Council of Supervision for the Legal Profession), which serves as the disciplinary body for lawyers.
